Microcontrollers are actually quite easy to work with. Get an Arduino, and have a kid tell you the basics.

Hoping for a sample

This is the hardware the contest is on. The LPC1768 has been around for a while now, but I have not had the chance to try one yet. As I understand, it uses a web based cloud compiler. And a FAT filesystem. That should make it easy to use from any platform. Check out the pinmap and its awsomeness!
